🍂 Mabon: Balance, Harvest, and Gratitude 🍂

The autumn equinox with Sapphic Self 🍂

Mabon is one of those festivals that feels like a deep breath. It’s the autumn equinox — the moment when day and night sit in perfect balance before the darker half of the year begins. A turning point. A pause.

For witches, pagans, and nature-lovers, it’s a harvest festival — but also a reminder of balance, gratitude, and letting go. Think of it as the witch’s Thanksgiving. A chance to gather what the land has given, to celebrate what we’ve grown (literally and figuratively), and to prepare for the slower, darker days ahead.

🌕 What Mabon Means to Us

For me and Mae, Mabon is about slowing down, grounding ourselves, and remembering to celebrate the enoughness of what we’ve already done. Running Sapphic Self, juggling chronic illness, managing life — it’s easy to always look at what’s next, what’s unfinished, what needs improving.

But Mabon says: stop. Look at what you’ve created. Look at what you’ve survived. Be thankful.

That’s why it’s one of my favourite times of year. It’s not about huge rituals or complicated setups (unless you want it to be). It’s about presence, balance, and a little seasonal magic.

🍎 How We Celebrate Mabon

Our celebrations are usually simple, cozy, and practical — things that work for our bodies, our spoons, and our little home. Some of our favourite ways:

  • Simmer Pots. Our house always smells like autumn on Mabon. Apples, cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, and bay leaves bubbling gently on the stove. It’s the quickest way to set the mood and bring warmth into the space. (I’ll link to our full Mabon simmer pot recipe here.)
  • Apple Magic. Apples are a classic symbol of Mabon. If you slice one crosswise, you reveal a little five-pointed star inside. We use them in baking, spells, or just as a snack with intention. To us, apples remind us of abundance, health, and the quiet magic hidden in everyday things.
  • Nature Offerings. We decorate with what’s around us — leaves, pinecones, acorns, sunflowers, marigolds. A mix of things from Mae’s allotment and little treasures foraged responsibly.
  • Feasting. Nothing fancy. Just hearty, warming food: soups, pies, roasted veg. Eating with intention, sometimes shared with loved ones, sometimes just the two of us.
  • Reflection. We write down things we’re grateful for, or things we’re ready to release before the darker half of the year. It doesn’t need to be elaborate — sometimes it’s just a scribble on a scrap of paper burned in a candle flame.

🔥 Why It Matters

We love Mabon because it feels like permission to stop striving. To pause the endless lists, the constant “what’s next,” and simply be.

It’s a reminder to stand still for a moment and admire what we’ve already achieved — the projects finished, the seeds planted, the growth we often rush past without noticing. So often we’re focused on what we haven’t done, what we still need to improve, or where we think we’ve fallen short. Mabon asks us to flip that thinking.

To look at the work we’ve already poured in. To see how far we’ve come. To honour the small wins, the quiet efforts, the resilience it took to make it this far.

We have already done the hard work, now it’s our time to reap the rewards and prepare for incoming cold and dark.

It’s about being present. Feeling the weight of the harvest in your hands, whether that’s literal — apples, herbs, vegetables — or figurative, like personal growth, community, or love.

Mabon whispers: this is enough. You are enough.

It’s a festival of balance — and balance isn’t just about equal halves, but about learning when to rest, when to receive, and when to celebrate.

✨ Closing

However you mark Mabon — whether it’s a full altar setup, a simmer pot bubbling away, a walk through the crunchy leaves, or just eating something seasonal with gratitude — remember it’s not about perfection.

It’s about presence. About balance. About honouring both the light and the dark.

Happy Mabon, friends. 🍂🕯️🌕

With gratitude & falling leaves,
Love, Tia 🍎🍁
