When you’re in the middle of a crisis, your brain often swings between two extremes: a need for comfort or a need for release. Building “crisis boxes” for both states can help you meet that need without harm.

1. The Self Sooth Box (The Light Side)

This box is about identity and grounding. It’s for when you feel “hollow” or disconnected and need to be reminded that you exist and are loved.

  • What’s inside: Photos of your favourite people/pets, letters from friends, a “reasons to stay” list, a specific scent (like a familiar perfume or essential oil), and grounding sensory items like a soft blanket or a fidget toy.
  • The Goal: To remind you of your “Why” and pull you back into a safe, familiar reality.

2. The Safe Destruction Box (The Heavy Side)

This is for the “darker” energy—the fight or flight response that feels like it needs a physical outlet. It’s for when you feel like you need to break something to let the pressure out.

  • What’s inside: Old magazines or phone books to shred, bubble wrap to pop, sticks to snap, or even old ceramic tiles or plates (if you have a safe place to smash them, like a box or a bag). You can even include a “scribble pad” where you can use a pen to literally tear through the paper.
  • The Goal: To provide a visceral, physical release for intense aggression or pain without hurting yourself. It allows you to “destroy” something and watch the physical result of your energy without any permanent consequences.
